  1. I’m moving to Southampton soon, looking forward to joining one of your choirs, especially any folk/ world music ones. Looks like there’s plenty to choose from!

  2. Hello Oliveoylnavvywife! I’m delighted you found Singing Southampton. You’ll get a friendly welcome at any of the choirs listed here. These are mostly community choirs, mainly based on the Natural Voice approach, which means no auditions and no requirement to read music. There are also several choral choirs in the area who do the more formal kind of singing if that’s what you prefer. Most of the Southampton area choirs and groups mentioned on Singing Southampton sing a mix of material with a bias towards world music. Sadly not so much folk, though it pops up occasionally. Winchester Community Choir does more folk style but they are currently not taking new members (a feature of their success!)

If you like folk music, try folk clubs, which are also friendly and informal. We go to the Fo’c’s’le Their website also has an extensive list of other folk clubs and choirs etc. Sign up for the Singing Southampton email newsletter for a monthly list of singing events – click under “Newsletters” in the right hand panel of our web pages. Good wishes and let me know how you get on. When are you moving here?
